Voodoo Doughnut Update – Menu for Universal CityWalk Released

Are you still patiently waiting for the new Universal CityWalk Voodoo Doughnut to open their doors? Although Universal has yet to release an exact opening date other than “spring” they did announce Voodoo’s new over-the-top menu, featuring 50 delicious and unique doughnut concoctions. These insane combos are sure to keep Voodoo’s reputation in high standing, as Voodoo has worked hard to build a cult following with their delightfully weird and delicious creations. Let’s take a quick look at some of the doughnuts our team at Orlando Food Tours can’t wait to experience. Voodoo Doll Although the specific characteristics of each of these doughnuts differ, the Voodoo Doll is the signature doughnut of the establishment and features a raised yeast doughnut stuffed full of raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a “voodoo doll pretzel pin” stabbed through its little frosting heart. Poor guy, but it sounds so good! Portland Cream A true tribute to the original Portland Voodoo location, this tasty raised yeast shell doughnut is filled with Bavarian cream and topped with chocolate and two frosting eyeballs, representing the vision of the great city of Portland. Grape Ape Almost removed once from the original Portland doughnut menu, this doughnut with vanilla frosting, grape dust, and lavender sprinkles was saved by dedicated customers. After numerous fans begged for this baby to stay on the menu, it became a huge success! It’s rumored that some hardcore Grape Ape fans now sport tattoos in its honor. The Loop  I LOVE cereal of all kinds so I’m super excited about their cereal menu items like The Loop, which is covered with vanilla frosting and a sweet and golden fruit loop breakfast cereal twist! Butterfingering This one speaks for itself – it’s a glorious chocolate cake doughnut filled to the brim with vanilla frosting and delicious Butterfinger crumbles. Memphis Mafia Okay, we’re contemplating dropping our 2018 diet for this bad boy! Fried dough with banana chunks and cinnamon covered in glaze, and then drizzled in chocolate and peanut butter with lots of peanuts and chocolate chips on top. YES, please!! Chuckles Doughnut If you’re a big coffee drinker this one might be for you! It’s a raised yeast doughnut with chocolate frosting dipped in mocha powder and topped with peanuts and caramel and chocolate drizzle. Can you say sugar rush? Pride Bar We’re happy to see this one included in the Orlando Universal CityWalk collection, celebrating our hometown Orlando Pride with a tasty doughnut chock full of luscious Bavarian cream and topped with vanilla frosting and all the vivid colors of the rainbow! Of course, some old-fashioned cake varieties are also on the menu, along with raised dough, shell, and fritter style treats. The largest single menu item (in size) that will be available at the new Universal Orlando location is the Texas doughnut (pictured below), which is equal in size to SIX regular glazed doughnuts. We’re assuming it will be the main rival to Homer Simpson’s gigantic pink doughnut available at Lard Lad Donuts at Universal Studios Orlando. Lastly, vegans will be thrilled to know that there is quite a decent selection of 13 different vegan treats, with vegan-friendly versions of some of the menu favorites such as the Voodoo Doll, Portland Cream, Old Dirty Bastard, and some fun new creative vegan selections! We can’t wait!! Can you? Let us know which kooky concoctions you can’t wait to try out in the comments below! *Voodoo Doughnut images taken from their website:

Booze-serving Taco Bell Cantina Opening Near UCF!

What goes with broke college students better than the Taco Bell dollar menu? How bout’ a Taco Bell with a dollar menu AND booze? That’s right, folks! Taco Bell is opening Central Florida’s first booze-serving Taco Bell Cantina location in the UCF area on the corner of Alafaya and University, across from UCF’s main entrance. Now, when drunk UCF students stumble out of Bar Louie (which also shares the plaza location) they can make their way to Taco Bell for some sustenance and, well, more booze! We must say, it does appear that Taco Bell is targeting the colleges in Florida, as they just recently opened their first Florida location in Gainesville, near the University of Florida. The UCF Taco Bell Cantina location will be the second Cantina location statewide. Trying to cater to today’s millennial tastes and preferences, the new Taco Bell Cantinas are more upscale than their regular Taco Bell locations and feature craft beer, wine, sangria, and their token frozen drinks… now with the option of adding alcohol! They also feature a large open kitchen and murals from local artists. The only thing missing is the drive-thru. Taco Bell has yet to release an opening date for the new UCF location but plans to open around 300 of the drive-thru-free locations over the next five years.

Al Capone-themed Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza Opening Near Winter Garden!

Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza is opening a second Al Capone-themed restaurant (complete with pictures of famous mobsters) in the Hamlin Town Center project near Horizon West, close to Winter Garden. This will be the second location for the new pizza chain, after originally launching their brand in Fort Myers, Florida. Themed after Chicago gangster Al Capone, the new Capone’s Coal Fired Pizza location will stick with the prohibition era-theme and will feature the same wood and iron décor, and exposed brick pizza ovens, as the original Fort Myers location. The new location, Hamlin Town Center, will also be home to another future restaurant from Capone’s owner, 23 Restaurant Services, themed after early 20th-century figure, Henry Ford, called Ford’s Garage. Ford’s Garage will include nods to the Ford Motor Co.’s early vehicles. If the second Capone’s sticks with the same menu as the original Fort Myers location, the menu will include pizza, pasta, sandwiches, calzones, salads, beer, wine, cocktails, and more. You can view the Fort Myer’s location menu here.

Tartine Wine Bar & Eaterie Opens With New Breakfast & Lunch Menu

It was announced back in November that Pete Morales, the former executive chef at F&D Kitchen & Bar in Lake Mary, was teaming up with Croissant Gourmet’s owner Francois Cahagne to open a new French restaurant in the Croissant Gourmet location on Edgewater Drive (2445 Edgewater Drive) in College Park. The much anticipated Tartine Wine Bar & Eaterie is now open and debuted its new breakfast and lunch menu earlier this week, serving up delicious savory items, including the legendary breakfast pastries of Chef Francois Cahagne. Additionally, husband and wife team Josh Martin and Jaimie Wikeen are the new seasoned chefs running the kitchen.  Also new, is the sexier French-themed ambiance of the restaurant which proudly features an artistic black wall chalk-paint illustration, outling France’s major wine-producing regions. A small dinner menu is in the works and will showcase gourmet French cooking with a Southern twist. Rumor has it, the menu will be “well-executed and ever-changing” and will specialize in Tartine house-made bread, as well as sharable plates. Dinner service will be added Thursday – Sunday in February and will include a menu for dogs (another possible rumor?). Tartine Wine Bar & Eaterie currently offers coffee by Julius Meinl (a new espresso machine!), hard-to-find unique French beers and ciders, and of course French wine (prices start at $24/bottle). The restaurant is now open from 8:00AM – 3:00PM. Hours will be extended to 8:00AM – 10:00PM beginning February 1st.

The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle Debuts January 31st, 2018!

As a self-proclaimed Gryffindor Harry Potter nerd (sorted by one of the actual Sorting Hats featured in the films via the Harry Potter Museum Warner Brothers Hollywood), I am excited to see that Universal Orlando is turning their “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle” at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter into a new projection mapping experience called “The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle.” The new show features a dazzling display of lights and special effects, and is set to music based on the original scores from the Harry Potter films. The show will celebrate the spirit and pride of the Hogwarts Houses by wrapping Hogwarts Castle in each house’s unique color concept (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw & Hufflepuff) as night falls on the island. “The Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle” will debut Wednesday, Jan. 31st at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, and will run Feb. 5th, and Feb. 7th – Feb. 12th with previews during “A Celebration of Harry Potter” Jan. 26th-28th.  Additional dates will be announced later and an exclusive preview event will be available on Friday January 26th for “A Celebration of Harry Potter” package holders. “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle,” which depicted various Christmas memories inspired from the Harry Potter films, debuted last month to rave reviews and has also been featured at Universal Studios Hollywood. We’re happy to see that Universal Orlando is keeping the concept alive for a bit longer (hopefully, for good!). Oh, and if you have extra time to spare at the parks – try eating your way through The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!

Downtown Orlando’s Kasa Rebranding as Chela Tequila & Tacos

Downtown Orlando’s Kasa Restaurant & Bar, formerly located at 183 S. Orange Street in the Cobb Plaza Center, is changing names and menus this month. The once popular tapas restaurant and brunch spot opened back in 2013 under the guidance of Food Network’s reality TV contestant Josh Lyons and was operated by Avenue Gastrobar‘s owner, Bento Group. Kasa closed for remodeling and employee retraining following New Year’s Eve festivities on December 31st 2017 and will reopen January 23rd 2018 as Chela Tequila and Tacos. Manager Rodrigo Solis confirms that the former tapas spot will be adopting an upscale Mexican-inspired menu. Some of Kasa’s menu items will remain, such as the Kasa corn, but otherwise there will be an entirely new selection of dishes, confirmed Solis. Current Kasa Orlando gift certificate holders can redeem their certificates at Chela upon its opening. Chela will also continue Kasa’s weekly Unwine’d Wednesday and Bubbles ‘n’ Brunch weekend events. A soft opening is rumored to be possible the week of January 15th. Keep an eye out for further opening information on their website.
